The Gathering

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. All: Amen.

The Prayers of Penitence

God so loved the world that he gave his only Son Jesus Christ to save us from our sins, to be our advocate in heaven, and to bring us to eternal life. Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, firmly resolved to keep God's commandments and to live in love and peace with all.

Silence is kept.

All: Most merciful God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we confess that we have sinned in thought, word and deed. We have not loved you with our whole heart. We have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. In your mercy forgive what we have been, help us to amend what we are, and direct what we shall be;

that we may do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with you, our God. Amen.

The Absolution

Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. All: Amen.

Gloria in Excelsis

All: Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer.

For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

O Lord, you know; remember me and visit me, and bring down retribution for me on my persecutors. In your forbearance do not take me away; know that on your account I suffer insult. Your words were found, and I ate them, and your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart; for I am called by your name, O Lord, God of hosts. I did not sit in the company of merrymakers, nor did I rejoice; under the weight of your hand I sat alone, for you had filled me with indignation. Why is my pain unceasing, my wound incurable, refusing to be healed? Truly, you are to me like a deceitful brook, like waters that fail.

Therefore, thus says the Lord: If you turn back, I will take you back, and you shall stand before me. If you utter what is precious, and not what is worthless, you shall serve as my mouth. It is they who will turn to you, not you who will turn to them. And I will make you to this people a fortified wall of bronze; they will fight against you, but they shall not prevail over you, for I am with you to save you and deliver you, says the Lord. I will deliver you out of the hand of the wicked, and redeem you from the grasp of the ruthless.

The Second Reading

Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honour. Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers.

Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; do not claim to be wiser than you are. Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all. If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.

Matthew 16.13-20

From that time on, Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and undergo great suffering at the hands of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, 'God forbid it, Lord! This must never happen to you.' But he turned and said to Peter, 'Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling-block to me; for you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things.'

Then Jesus told his disciples, 'If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit them if they gain the whole world but forfeit their life? Or what will they give in return for their life?

'For the Son of Man is to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay everyone for what has been done. Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.'

The Creed

Please stand.

All: We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Christ is our peace. He has reconciled us to God in one body by the cross. We meet in his name and share his peace.

The Prayer Over the Gifts

As the grain once scattered in the fields and the grapes once dispersed on the hillside are now united on this table in bread and wine, so, Lord, may your whole Church soon be gathered together from the corners of the earth into your kingdom. All: Amen.

The Eucharistic Prayer

The Lord be with you All: and also with you.

Lift up your hearts. All: We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All: It is right to give thanks and praise.

You are worthy of our thanks and praise, Lord God of truth, for by the breath of your mouth you have spoken your word, and all things have come into being. You fashioned us in your image and placed us in the garden of your delight. Though we chose the path of rebellion you would not abandon your own. Again and again you drew us into your covenant of grace. You gave your people the law and taught us by your prophets to look for your reign of justice, mercy and peace. As we watch for the signs of your kingdom on earth, we echo the song of the angels in heaven, evermore praising you and saying:

All: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessèd is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Lord God, you are the most holy one, enthroned in splendour and light, yet in the coming of your Son Jesus Christ you reveal the power of your love made perfect in our human weakness. Embracing our humanity, Jesus showed us the way of salvation; loving us to the end, he gave himself to death for us; dying for his own, he set us free from the bonds of sin, that we might rise and reign with him in glory.

On the night he gave up himself for us all he took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.

Great is the mystery of faith: All: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

Therefore we proclaim the death that he suffered on the cross, we celebrate his resurrection, his bursting from the tomb, we rejoice that he reigns at your right hand on high and we long for his coming in glory. As we recall the one, perfect sacrifice of our redemption, Father, by your Holy Spirit let these gifts of your creation be to us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ; form us into the likeness of Christ and make us a perfect offering in your sight.

Look with favour on your people and in your mercy hear the cry of our hearts. Bless the earth, heal the sick, let the oppressed go free and fill your Church with power from on high. Gather your people from the ends of the earth to feast with the Blessèd Virgin Mary and all the saints at the table in your kingdom, where the new creation is brought to perfection in Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever. All: Amen.

The Lord's Prayer

As our Saviour taught us so we pray.

The Breaking of the Bread

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. All: Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.

The Invitation to Communion

Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Blessèd are those who are called to his supper. All: Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word, and I shall be healed.

Dying and living, he declared your love, gave us grace, and opened the gate of glory. May we who share Christ's body live his risen life; we who drink his cup bring life to others; we whom the Spirit lights give light to the world.

Keep us firm in the hope you have set before us, so we and all your children shall be free, and the whole earth live to praise your name; through Christ our Lord. All: Amen.

Praying for a New Bishop of Southwark

Bishop Christopher has now retired and work is progressing on the discernment process for the appointment of a bishop to succeed him and to build on all that Bishop Christopher has achieved. This will be a particular focus at Evensong on 13 September. Please join in the Diocese's prayer:

God of all times and places, send us a Bishop who will lead us faithfully through days of rejoicing and nights of challenge, with prayer and Scripture, with love and laughter, with bread and wine. Send your Holy Spirit to guide those entrusted with this process. May they recognise the person of your choice, with ears that are open and hearts that are wise. Make us thankful for all that has gone before, ready and hopeful for all that lies ahead, led by a Bishop whose ministry is a blessing to everyone in Southwark Diocese, as we hear the good news of Jesus and delight in the love of God. Visit from Rouen Cathedral

The Cathedral Unity Group is looking forward to hosting visitors from our twinned Cathedral in Rouen over the weekend of 23-25 October. We are hoping that some members of the congregation might be willing to offer hospitality by providing accommodation for our guests. Over the years many friendships have been made and sustained in this way. The Unity Group hosts visits from Rouen and Bergen Cathedrals every other year, so in addition to requesting offers of accommodation on this occasion, we would like to build up a bank of parishioners who would like to help with this in the future.

As you came into church, one of our stewards will have asked you if you wanted to take the service sheet on your phone. By reading the service sheet in this way you are helping us each week reduce our paper use and our printing costs. Thank you for playing your part. Every copy we don't have to print saves us a couple of pounds and also helps us become more sustainable by using less paper. Harry Bramma

We are sorry to learn of the death of Harry Bramma who was Director of Music at Southwark Cathedral from 1976-1989. May he rest in the love and peace of Christ. We will share details of Harry's funeral service in due course.

Mothers' Union New Banner Appeal

Members of the Mothers' Union are very grateful for the overwhelming generosity of the congregation, in response to the appeal for a new banner. English Cathedrals Exhibition

21 July – 31 August

The Peter Marlow Foundation exhibition, 'The English Cathedral' featuring Peter Marlow's photographs of the naves of each of England's 42 Anglican cathedrals, will be on display in Southwark Cathedral until the end of August.

In 2008 Peter Marlow was commissioned by Royal Mail on the 300-year anniversary of the completion of St Paul's Cathedral to photograph six cathedrals. These were to be issued as commemorative stamps.

Peter was inspired to continue this pilgrimage and capture all 42 cathedrals of the Church of England using only natural light. This formed an ethereal collection of images, comparing and contrasting the architectural nuances of the Anglican Cathedrals.

Lancelot 400

Lancelot 400 marks the 400th anniversary of the death of Bishop Lancelot Andrewes with a weekend of worship, music, talks, tours and exhibitions at Southwark Cathedral. Andrewes was Bishop of Winchester from 1619 and became closely associated with Southwark, where he died in 1626. He is the only Bishop of Winchester buried in Southwark Cathedral. A brilliant scholar, linguist and preacher, he was also one of the translators of the King James Bible. His sermons and writings continued to influence figures including T. S. Eliot, and his legacy remains significant in Anglican worship, theology and English literature.

Talk by Rowan Williams — Releasing the Spirit: Lancelot Andrewes and the Poetics of Preaching — 2.00pm–3.30pm Former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams explores Andrewes' life, faith and distinctive approach to preaching. Free, but pre-booking is recommended via Eventbrite. The lecture will be followed by 4.00 Choral Evensong

All Day Exhibition from Lambeth Palace Library Discover a display of facsimile manuscripts and documents relating to Andrewes and his life.

Choral Eucharist — 11.00am The Very Rev'd David Hoyle, Dean of Westminster, will preach. The service will include the first performance of a newly commissioned hymn by Malcolm Guite, written for the anniversary.

Festal Choral Evensong — 3.00pm The Cathedral Choir is joined by the Choir of Pembroke College, Cambridge, where Andrewes was Master, for a special service.

St Patrick's Parish Pilgrimage 1: We Walk A Path on Saturday 12th September

Please join us to celebrate the path we walk with Francis of Assisi. We will leave from the St Francis & St Elisabeth Chapel, Southwark Cathedral at 10.15 a.m. The route is short, but there will be stops along the way. Making space for love with heart, mind, and soul

It is good to welcome you to Southwark Cathedral. Set on the south bank of the River Thames, in one of the most vibrant and diverse communities in London, this building has been a constant witness in a place of change.

The first church was built on this site around the year 606. First a convent, then a monastery, it became in 1106 the Augustinian Priory of St Mary Overie ('over-the-river'). With Westminster Abbey and St Bartholomew the Great in Smithfield, it is one of the three remaining great monastic churches of London. At the Reformation, the Priory became a parish church, and it remains so for the people of Bankside. In 1905, as south London was rapidly expanding, the church was consecrated as the Cathedral for the new Diocese of Southwark.

The Cathedral has a momentous and significant history and has had links with many famous and influential characters including St Thomas Becket, Geoffrey Chaucer, William Shakespeare and Charles Dickens. It has also been a Cathedral for those who feel on the edges of faith or society, our welcome reaching out to all people in their beautiful God-given diversity.

Here, our Christian faith is captured in our vision to 'make space for love: with heart, mind, and soul'. Faith requires our hearts to stand up for social justice, upholding integrity and kindness, and supporting the vulnerable and oppressed. It challenges our thinking, inviting our minds to be enquiring, honest, and generous. Faith also seeks to deepen our inner lives, with the arts and creativity, by sharing in the life of our community, and by learning the arts of prayer and attention. In Jesus Christ we see the human face of God, and our faith in him is our joy and our life.
