The Church's Baptismal Commission

Today, at this Choral Eucharist, we are delighted to welcome the family and friends of Maya Dow-Turing, who has been brought to baptism.

We bring children to baptism knowing that Jesus died and rose again for them and trusting in the promise that God hears and answers prayer. We pray that in Jesus Christ they will know the forgiveness of their sins and the new life of the Spirit.

As they grow up, they will need the help and encouragement of the Christian community, so that they may learn to know God in public worship and private prayer; follow Jesus Christ in the life of faith; serve their neighbour after the example of Christ; and in due course come to confirmation. As part of the Church of Christ, we all have a duty to support them by prayer, example and teaching. Their parents and godparents have the prime responsibility for guiding and helping them in their early years. This is a demanding task for which they will need the help and grace of God.

Therefore let us pray today for grace in guiding Maya in the way of faith.

Faithful and loving God, bless those who care for Maya and grant them your gifts of love, wisdom and faith. Pour upon them your healing and reconciling love and protect their homes from all evil. Fill them with the light of your presence and establish them in the joy of your kingdom, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Prayers of Penitence

God so loved the world that he gave his only Son Jesus Christ to save us from our sins, to be our advocate in heaven, and to bring us to eternal life. Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, firmly resolved to keep God's commandments and to live in love and peace with all.

The First Reading

A reading from the Book of Jonah.

When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil ways, God changed his mind about the calamity that he had said he would bring upon them; and he did not do it.

But this was very displeasing to Jonah, and he became angry. He prayed to the LORD and said, 'O LORD! Is not this what I said while I was still in my own country? That is why I fled to Tarshish at the beginning; for I knew that you are a gracious God and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love, and ready to relent from punishing. And now, O LORD, please take my life from me, for it is better for me to die than to live.' And the LORD said, 'Is it right for you to be angry?' Then Jonah went out of the city and sat down east of the city, and made a booth for himself there. He sat under it in the shade, waiting to see what would become of the city.

The LORD God appointed a bush, and made it come up over Jonah, to give shade over his head, to save him from his discomfort; so Jonah was very happy about the bush. But when dawn came up the next day, God appointed a worm that attacked the bush, so that it withered. The Second Reading

For to me, living is Christ and dying is gain. If I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labour for me; and I do not know which I prefer. I am hard pressed between the two: my desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better; but to remain in the flesh is more necessary for you. Since I am convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with all of you for your progress and joy in faith, so that I may share abundantly in your boasting in Christ Jesus when I come to you again.

Only, live your life in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that, whether I come and see you or am absent and hear about you, I will know that you are standing firm in one spirit, striving side by side with one mind for the faith of the gospel, and are in no way intimidated by your opponents. For them this is evidence of their destruction, but of your salvation. And this is God's doing. Matthew 20.1-16

'The kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire labourers for his vineyard. After agreeing with the labourers for the usual daily wage, he sent them into his vineyard. When he went out about nine o'clock, he saw others standing idle in the market-place; and he said to them, "You also go into the vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right." So they went. When he went out again about noon and about three o'clock, he did the same. And about five o'clock he went out and found others standing around; and he said to them, "Why are you standing here idle all day?" They said to him, "Because no one has hired us." He said to them, "You also go into the vineyard."

When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his manager, "Call the labourers and give them their pay, beginning with the last and then going to the first." When those hired about five o'clock came, each of them received the usual daily wage. Now when the first came, they thought they would receive more; but each of them also received the usual daily wage. And when they received it, they grumbled against the landowner, saying, "These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat." But he replied to one of them, "Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? Take what belongs to you and go; I choose to give to this last the same as I give to you. Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or are you envious because I am generous?" So the last will be first, and the first will be last.'

The Liturgy of Baptism

Presentation of the Candidate

The candidate to be baptised, together with her family and godparents, gather around the Font. The President addresses the whole congregation.

We thank God for Maya who has come to be baptised today. Christ loves her and welcomes her into his Church. Will you support her as she begins her journey of faith? All: We will.

The Decision

The President addresses the candidate through her parents and godparents.

We all wander far from God and lose our way: Christ comes to find us and welcomes us home. In baptism we respond to his call. Therefore I ask:

Do you turn away from sin? I do. Do you reject evil? I do. Do you turn to Christ as Saviour? I do. Do you trust in him as Lord? I do.

Signing with the Cross

The President anoints the candidate with the Oil of Baptism, making the sign of the cross on her forehead, saying:

Maya, Christ claims you for his own. Receive the sign of his cross.

When the candidate has been signed, the President says:

Do not be ashamed to confess the faith of Christ crucified. All: Stand bravely with him against all the powers of evil, and remain faithful to Christ to the end of your life.

May almighty God deliver you from the powers of darkness, restore in you the image of his glory, and lead you in the light and obedience of Christ. All: Amen.

Prayer over Water

The President pours water into the Font.

We praise you, loving Father, for the gift of your Son Jesus. He was baptised in the River Jordan, where your Spirit came upon him and revealed him as the Son you love. He sent his followers to baptise all who turn to him. Now, Father, we ask you to bless this water, that those who are baptised in it may be cleansed in the water of life, and, filled with your Spirit, may know that they are loved as your children, safe in Christ for ever. All: Amen.

Profession of Faith

The President addresses the whole congregation.

Let us affirm, together with the parents and godparents of Maya, who is being baptised, the faith of the Church:

Do you believe and trust in God the Father? All: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

Do you believe and trust in his Son Jesus Christ? All: I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

Do you believe and trust in the Holy Spirit? All: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Baptism

The President pours water on the candidate, saying:

Maya, I baptise you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. All: Amen.

When the candidate has been baptised, the President anoints her with the Oil of Chrism, saying:

May God, who has received you by baptism into his Church, pour upon you the riches of his grace, that within the company of Christ's pilgrim people you may daily be renewed by his anointing Spirit, and come to the inheritance of the saints in glory. All: Amen.

The President addresses the whole congregation.

There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism: Maya, by one Spirit we are all baptised into one body. All: We welcome you into the fellowship of faith; we are children of the same heavenly Father; we welcome you.

The Lord's Prayer

Farewell to the Canon Chancellor

Wendy has been associated with the Cathedral since 2002 when she was appointed Honorary Curate, and was later appointed Honorary Canon in 2008. She has served as Canon Chancellor since December 2020.

Wendy also worked for many years as the Director of Press and Communications for the Diocese of Southwark and the Bishop of Southwark's Press Officer, before taking up the role of Diocesan Director of Discipleship, Lay Ministry and Continuing Ministerial Education.

Children and Young People

Children and young people are an important part of our Cathedral family and play a vital role in our life together. We would love to encourage your children to join one of our Sunday groups for young people.

Crèche During the 11.00am Sunday Eucharist, crèche facilities are available in the Chapter Room for accompanied children under 4.

Junior Xpress is for children in Reception to Year 5, gathering each week in term time in the Cathedral and after a prayer and blessing will go for worship and activities before rejoining the rest of the congregation for the Lord's Prayer and Holy Communion. Cathedral Listening Team

Would you like to talk to someone confidentially? Is something/one on your heart? The Cathedral Listening team are volunteers, who sit in the Retrochoir behind the High Altar after the Choral Eucharist on a Sunday, ready to listen to anyone who would like to talk in confidence. They are available from after the service until 1.00pm. If you would like to talk to a Cathedral Listener, please approach them directly or sit nearby if they are already occupied.

During the collection, our stewards will have offered you a basket or a contactless device. If you gave your collection by contactless, did you know that you can gift aid your donation? To gift aid your donations simply donate one week on the fixed giving points as you came in, perhaps make a small donation one of these devices and it will ask you to enter your details for gift aid and the system will automatically apply gift aid on any future donation with the same card.

The Retirement of Canon Wendy Robins

Today we celebrate Wendy's long and much-valued ministry here at the Cathedral and in the Diocese. Alan has been very much part of Wendy's ministry here and has his own ministry as a server and listener. Wendy is going to take some time out, but Alan will still be around. Our thoughts and prayers will be with them both in this time of transition. Please join us for celebratory drinks following the 11.00am Choral Eucharist.

Praying for a New Bishop of Southwark

Bishop Christopher has now retired and work is progressing on the discernment process for the appointment of a bishop to succeed him and to build on all that Bishop Christopher has achieved.

Please join in the Diocese's prayer:

God of all times and places, send us a Bishop who will lead us faithfully through days of rejoicing and nights of challenge, with prayer and Scripture, with love and laughter, with bread and wine. Send your Holy Spirit to guide those entrusted with this process. May they recognise the person of your choice, with ears that are open and hearts that are wise. Make us thankful for all that has gone before, ready and hopeful for all that lies ahead, led by a Bishop whose ministry is a blessing to everyone in Southwark Diocese, as we hear the good news of Jesus and delight in the love of God. Amen.

As you came into church, one of our stewards will have asked you if you wanted to take the service sheet on your phone. By reading the service sheet in this way you are helping us each week reduce our paper use and our printing costs. Thank you for playing your part. Every copy we don't have to print saves us a couple of pounds and also helps us become more sustainable by using less paper. We will always have paper copies for those who prefer it, but if you can think about switching to using your device, we would be grateful.

Threads Through the Cross

Experience a stunning textile journey through Jesus' life, death and resurrection in the Cathedral over the next month.

Part of the hugely popular Threads Through the Bible trilogy by artist Jacqui Parkinson, Threads Through the Cross showcases the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus through intricate textile panels, with each panel over 2 metres high and ranging from 1.5 to over 3 metres wide.

Threads through the Bible is an incredible display of three sequences – Threads Through Creation, Threads Through the Cross and Threads through Revelation. Taking over 10 years to complete, a total of 44 panels and over 25 million stiches, this impressive trilogy of work would reach more than 80 meters long when exhibited together.

We are sorry to learn of the death of Harry Bramma who was Director of Music at Southwark Cathedral from 1976-1989. May he rest in the love and peace of Christ. Harry's Requiem Eucharist will take place on Thursday 8 October at 2.00pm. All are welcome.

Ninian Comper East Window

We have received a structural update on our historic Ninian Comper window above the High Altar. While the window is certainly in need of significant repair, inspectors have assured us it is not in danger of falling out imminently. This means we can safely wait and address its restoration as part of our planned heritage works.

The entire window will need to be removed and stored pending a comprehensive plan for conservation and reinstatement. We are currently working on a fundraising strategy and will provide updates when we have further information. Robes AGM and Showcase

Robes invites you to our AGM to learn more about the work that we deliver throughout the year for people experiencing homelessness in Lambeth and Southwark. The Christchurch, Blackfriars shelter is one of 20 that Robes provides through the winter months, alongside our day centre at Elephant & Castle which opens throughout the year.

Our AGM and showcase of our work takes place in the Weston Library on Wed October 7th from 6pm to 8pm. We will be serving light refreshments, wine, and soft drinks and the event is free to attend.

Lancelot 400

Lancelot 400 marks the 400th anniversary of the death of Bishop Lancelot Andrewes with a weekend of worship, music, talks, tours and exhibitions at Southwark Cathedral. Andrewes was Bishop of Winchester from 1619 and became closely associated with Southwark, where he died in 1626. He is the only Bishop of Winchester buried in Southwark Cathedral. A brilliant scholar, linguist and preacher, he was also one of the translators of the King James Bible. His sermons and writings continued to influence figures including T. S. Eliot, and his legacy remains significant in Anglican worship, theology and English literature.

Join us as we celebrate the life and enduring legacy of one of the Church of England's greatest scholars, in the place where he is laid to rest. Tickets available on Eventbrite.

Henry Kimber: 10 Years as Lay Clerk

As our choirs return to their routine of rehearsals and services this September, we are delighted to mark 10 years since Henry Kimber started singing in our Cathedral Choir as cantoris alto Lay Clerk. Henry joined the Choir under former director Peter Wright, and has been a dedicated and much valued member of the back row ever since. We thank him for his service to the Choir, and look forward to his next 10 years with us!

Making Space for Love with Heart, Mind, and Soul

It is good to welcome you to Southwark Cathedral. Set on the south bank of the River Thames, in one of the most vibrant and diverse communities in London, this building has been a constant witness in a place of change.

The first church was built on this site around the year 606. First a convent, then a monastery, it became in 1106 the Augustinian Priory of St Mary Overie ('over-the-river'). With Westminster Abbey and St Bartholomew the Great in Smithfield, it is one of the three remaining great monastic churches of London. At the Reformation, the Priory became a parish church, and it remains so for the people of Bankside. In 1905, as south London was rapidly expanding, the church was consecrated as the Cathedral for the new Diocese of Southwark.

The Cathedral has a momentous and significant history and has had links with many famous and influential characters including St Thomas Becket, Geoffrey Chaucer, William Shakespeare and Charles Dickens. It has also been a Cathedral for those who feel on the edges of faith or society, our welcome reaching out to all people in their beautiful God-given diversity.

Here, our Christian faith is captured in our vision to 'make space for love: with heart, mind, and soul'. Faith requires our hearts to stand up for social justice, upholding integrity and kindness, and supporting the vulnerable and oppressed. It challenges our thinking, inviting our minds to be enquiring, honest, and generous. Faith also seeks to deepen our inner lives, with the arts and creativity, by sharing in the life of our community, and by learning the arts of prayer and attention. In Jesus Christ we see the human face of God, and our faith in him is our joy and our life.
