The Prayers of Penitence

God so loved the world that he gave his only Son Jesus Christ to save us from our sins, to be our advocate in heaven, and to bring us to eternal life. Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, firmly resolved to keep God's commandments and to live in love and peace with all.

All: Most merciful God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we confess that we have sinned in thought, word and deed. We have not loved you with our whole heart. We have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. In your mercy forgive what we have been, help us to amend what we are, and direct what we shall be;

The Absolution

Listen to me, you that pursue righteousness, you that seek the LORD. Look to the rock from which you were hewn, and to the quarry from which you were dug. For the LORD will comfort Zion; he will comfort all her waste places, and will make her wilderness like Eden, her desert like the garden of the LORD; joy and gladness will be found in her, thanksgiving and the voice of song.

I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect.

For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of yourself more highly than you ought to think, but to think with sober judgement, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. For as in one body we have many members, and not all the members have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of another. We have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us: prophecy, in proportion to faith; ministry, in ministering; the teacher, in teaching; the exhorter, in exhortation; the giver, in generosity; the leader, in diligence; the compassionate, in cheerfulness.

Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, 'Who do people say that the Son of Man is?' And they said, 'Some say John the Baptist, but others Elijah, and still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.' He said to them, 'But who do you say that I am?' Simon Peter answered, 'You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.' And Jesus answered him, 'Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah! The Creed

All: We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Once we were far off but now in union with Christ Jesus, we have been brought near through the shedding of Christ's blood, for he is our peace. The peace of the Lord be always with you All: and also with you.

The Prayer over the Gifts

Wise and gracious God, you spread a table before us; nourish your people with the word of life and the bread of heaven. All: Amen.

The Eucharistic Prayer

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All: It is right to give thanks and praise.

It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks, holy Father, almighty and eternal God. From sunrise to sunset this day is holy, for Christ has risen from the tomb and scattered the darkness of death with light that will not fade. This day the risen Lord walks with your gathered people, unfolds for us your word, and makes himself known in the breaking of the bread. And though the night will overtake this day you summon us to live in endless light, the never-ceasing sabbath of the Lord. And so, with choirs of angels and with all the heavenly host, we proclaim your glory and join their unending song of praise: All: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. We praise and bless you, loving Father, through Jesus Christ, our Lord; and as we obey his command, send your Holy Spirit, that broken bread and wine outpoured may be for us the body and blood of your dear Son. On the night before he died he had supper with his friends and, taking bread, he praised you. He broke the bread, gave it to them and said: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. When supper was ended he took the cup of wine. Again he praised you, gave it to them and said: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.

So, Father, we remember all that Jesus did, in him we plead with confidence his sacrifice made once for all upon the cross. Bringing before you the bread of life and cup of salvation, we proclaim his death and resurrection until he comes in glory. Great is the mystery of faith: All: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

Lord of all life, help us to work together for that day when your kingdom comes and justice and mercy will be seen in all the earth. Look with favour on your people, gather us in your loving arms and bring us with the Blessèd Virgin Mary and all the saints to feast at your table in heaven. Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, O loving Father, for ever and ever. All: Amen.

The Lord's Prayer

As our Saviour taught us so we pray. Please pray in whichever language you feel most comfortable.

The Breaking of the Bread

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. All: Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.

Agnus Dei

The Invitation to Communion

Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Blessèd are those who are called to his supper. All: Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word, and I shall be healed.

Dying and living, he declared your love, gave us grace, and opened the gate of glory. Children and Young People

Children and young people are an important part of our Cathedral family and play a vital role in our life together. We would love to encourage your children to join one of our Sunday groups for young people.

Crèche: During the 11.00am Sunday Eucharist, crèche facilities are available in the Chapter Room for accompanied children under 4.

Junior and Youth Xpress are on their summer break and resume again on Sunday 13 September.

Cathedral Listening Team

Would you like to talk to someone confidentially? Is something/one on your heart? The Cathedral Listening team are volunteers, who sit in the Retrochoir behind the High Altar after the Choral Eucharist on a Sunday, ready to listen to anyone who would like to talk in confidence. They are available from after the service until 1.00pm. If you would like to talk to a Cathedral Listener, please approach them directly or sit nearby if they are already occupied.

During the collection, our stewards will have offered you a basket or a contactless device. If you gave your collection by contactless, did you know that you can gift aid your donation? To gift aid your donations simply donate one week on the fixed giving points as you came in, perhaps make a small donation one of these devices and it will ask you to enter your details for gift aid and the system will automatically apply gift aid on any future donation with the same card.

Praying for a New Bishop of Southwark

Bishop Christopher has now retired and work is progressing on the discernment process for the appointment of a bishop to succeed him and to build on all that Bishop Christopher has achieved. This will be a particular focus at Evensong on 13 September. Please join in the Diocese's prayer:

God of all times and places, send us a Bishop who will lead us faithfully through days of rejoicing and nights of challenge, with prayer and Scripture, with love and laughter, with bread and wine. Send your Holy Spirit to guide those entrusted with this process. May they recognise the person of your choice, with ears that are open and hearts that are wise. Make us thankful for all that has gone before, ready and hopeful for all that lies ahead, led by a Bishop whose ministry is a blessing to everyone in Southwark Diocese, as we hear the good news of Jesus and delight in the love of God. Vacancy for Youth Xpress Leaders

We are looking for volunteer leaders for Youth Xpress, our programme for young people in Year 6 - Year 11 (ages 10/11 to 15/16). Youth Xpress meets once a month in term-time at the same time as the 11.00am service, and discusses a broad range of topics and issues within a Christian context in an informal setting. Volunteers would be expected to commit to one Sunday a term (so maximum of three across the year) and work with the other leader to prepare the session and then lead it.

Visit from Rouen Cathedral

Friday 23 — Sunday 25 October 2026

The Cathedral Unity Group is looking forward to hosting visitors from our twinned Cathedral in Rouen over the weekend of 23-25 October. We are hoping that some members of the congregation might be willing to offer hospitality by providing accommodation for our guests. Over the years many friendships have been made and sustained in this way. The Unity Group hosts visits from Rouen and Bergen Cathedrals every other year, so in addition to requesting offers of accommodation on this occasion, we would like to build up a bank of parishioners who would like to help with this in the future.

Using a Device to Read the Service Sheet

As you came into church, one of our stewards will have asked you if you wanted to take the service sheet on your phone. By reading the service sheet in this way you are helping us each week reduce our paper use and our printing costs. Thank you for playing your part. Every copy we don't have to print saves us a couple of pounds and also helps us become more sustainable by using less paper. We will always have paper copies for those who prefer it, but if you can think about switching to using your device, we would be grateful.

Mothers' Union New Banner Appeal

Members of the Mothers' Union are very grateful for the overwhelming generosity of the congregation, in response to the appeal for a new banner. The amount raised to date is £4099 and we have raised the deposit, thus ensuring that the banner can be ordered once the design is approved. The balance of £1714 is now in our sights and it does seem achievable. As well as thanking the congregation we would like to thank Canon Michael for his hard work and support, Eric Collins, Neil Tryner and Ted Halshaw, the Cathedral CFO. We consider ourselves blessed to be surrounded by generous and supportive people. Thank you everyone and we hope to see you at our next fundraising event, which is the cake sale on 6 September after the 11.00am Eucharist.

English Cathedrals Exhibition

21 July – 31 August

The Peter Marlow Foundation exhibition, 'The English Cathedral' featuring Peter Marlow's photographs of the naves of each of England's 42 Anglican cathedrals, will be on display in Southwark Cathedral until the end of August.

In 2008 Peter Marlow was commissioned by Royal Mail on the 300-year anniversary of the completion of St Paul's Cathedral to photograph six cathedrals. These were to be issued as commemorative stamps.

Peter was inspired to continue this pilgrimage and capture all 42 cathedrals of the Church of England using only natural light. This formed an ethereal collection of images, comparing and contrasting the architectural nuances of the Anglican Cathedrals.

Projects in Our Link Diocese of Masvingo, Zimbabwe

It was great to see Bishop Osiward and his wife, Jane, from our Link Diocese in Masvingo, Zimbabwe, in the Cathedral in July for Bishop Christopher's farewell and again for the 11.00am Choral Eucharist the following day.

On Sunday 2 August we had a meeting of our Link Group to distribute the money that we have raised for projects since the Bishop's visit in April. So, if you have not already done so please consider giving what you can to help with the projects. The Cathedral soup kitchen offers hot meals to those in need and this costs just £72 per annum for one person: might you be able to help with the cost of this? Or the schools supplementary feeding programme costs just £20 to feed a child for an academic year. Might you be able to help with this?

General Synod 2026 Elections: Could You Stand?

The Diocese of Southwark is encouraging clergy and lay people to consider standing in the General Synod 2026 elections. General Synod is the national assembly of the Church of England, helping shape legislation, worship, policy and the national budget. Members serve until 2031 and can represent their parish, community and diocese, contribute to national debates and help shape the Church's future. They particularly welcome candidates from underrepresented backgrounds. The voluntary role involves two five-day meetings each year, with expenses covered.

Lancelot 400

Lancelot 400 marks the 400th anniversary of the death of Bishop Lancelot Andrewes with a weekend of worship, music, talks, tours and exhibitions at Southwark Cathedral. Andrewes was Bishop of Winchester from 1619 and became closely associated with Southwark, where he died in 1626. He is the only Bishop of Winchester buried in Southwark Cathedral. A brilliant scholar, linguist and preacher, he was also one of the translators of the King James Bible. His sermons and writings continued to influence figures including T. S. Eliot, and his legacy remains significant in Anglican worship, theology and English literature.

Saturday 26 September

• All day exhibition from Lambeth Palace Library: Discover a display of facsimile manuscripts and documents relating to Andrewes and his life.
• Southwark Cathedral Walking Tour: Lancelot Andrewes' London, 10.30am–12.00pm. Explore landmarks connected with Andrewes' childhood, priesthood and time as a bishop on a guided walk through the City of London. Please note this involves long periods of standing. Tickets from £10 via Eventbrite.
• Cathedral Guided Tour: Lancelot Andrewes Special, 11.00am–12.00pm. Discover Southwark Cathedral's connections with Andrewes as part of the Lancelot 400 celebrations. Tickets from £7 via Eventbrite.
• Book of Common Prayer Eucharist, 12.30pm. Celebrate Holy Communion following the Book of Common Prayer, including one of Andrewes' own sermons.
• Talk by Rowan Williams: Releasing the Spirit: Lancelot Andrewes and the Poetics of Preaching, 2.00pm–3.30pm. Former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams explores Andrewes' life, faith and distinctive approach to preaching. Free, but pre-booking is recommended via Eventbrite.
• Choral Evensong, 4.00pm.

Sunday 27 September

• All day exhibition from Lambeth Palace Library: Discover a display of facsimile manuscripts and documents relating to Andrewes and his life.
• Choral Eucharist, 11.00am. The Very Rev'd David Hoyle, Dean of Westminster, will preach. The service will include the first performance of a newly commissioned hymn by Malcolm Guite, written for the anniversary.
• Festal Choral Evensong, 3.00pm. The Cathedral Choir is joined by the Choir of Pembroke College, Cambridge, where Andrewes was Master, for a special service.
