The Gathering

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. All: Amen.

The President welcomes the congregation and introduces the celebration.

The Prayers of Penitence

Wisdom rejoiced before God, delighting in the whole created world and rejoicing in the children of the earth. Yet we have turned from the ways of wisdom and failed to delight in all that God has made. Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith.

Silence is kept.

You delight in creation, its colour and diversity; yet we have misused the earth and plundered its resources for our own selfish ends. Lord, have mercy. All: Lord, have mercy.

You have brought order out of chaos, light in darkness, good out of evil, but we have preferred darkness in words and deeds which dishonour God's holy name. Christ, have mercy. All: Christ, have mercy.

You have showered us with blessings, but we have been grudging towards others and lacking in generosity in word and deed. Lord, have mercy. All: Lord, have mercy.

The Absolution

May the Father forgive you by the death of the Son, and strengthen you to live by the power of the Spirit all your days. All: Amen.

Gloria in Excelsis

All: Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer.

For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

He is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything. The Creed

Please stand.

All: We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Father, we give you thanks and praise through your beloved Son Jesus Christ, your living Word, through whom you have created all things; who was sent by you in your great goodness to be our Saviour. By the power of the Holy Spirit he took flesh; as your Son, born of the blessèd Virgin, he lived on earth and went about among us; he opened wide his arms for us on the cross; he put an end to death by dying for us; and revealed the resurrection by rising to new life; so he fulfilled your will and won for you a holy people.

And now we give you thanks because in him, our risen Lord, the new creation is being brought to perfection, a broken world is being renewed, and creation itself will share in the glorious liberty of the children of God. Great is the mystery of faith: All: Christ has died: Christ is risen: Christ will come again.

And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross, his perfect sacrifice made once for the sins of the whole world; rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate this memorial of our redemption. As we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, we bring before you this bread and this cup and we thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you.

Send the Holy Spirit on your people and gather into one in your kingdom all who share this one bread and one cup, so that we, in the company of the Blessèd Virgin Mary and all the saints, may praise and glorify you for ever, through Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever. All: Amen.

The Lord's Prayer

As our Saviour taught us so we pray.

The Breaking of the Bread

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. All: Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.

The Invitation to Communion

Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Blessèd are those who are called to his supper. All: Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word, and I shall be healed.

Cathedral Listening Team

Praying for a New Bishop of Southwark

Bishop Christopher has now retired and work is progressing on the discernment process for the appointment of a bishop to succeed him and to build on all that Bishop Christopher has achieved. This will be a particular focus at Evensong on 13 September. Please join in the Diocese's prayer:

God of all times and places, send us a Bishop who will lead us faithfully through days of rejoicing and nights of challenge, with prayer and Scripture, with love and laughter, with bread and wine. Send your Holy Spirit to guide those entrusted with this process. May they recognise the person of your choice, with ears that are open and hearts that are wise. Make us thankful for all that has gone before, ready and hopeful for all that lies ahead, led by a Bishop whose ministry is a blessing to everyone in Southwark Diocese, as we hear the good news of Jesus and delight in the love of God. Amen.

By reading the service sheet in this way you are helping us each week reduce our paper use and our printing costs. Thank you for playing your part. Every copy we don't have to print saves us a couple of pounds and also helps us become more sustainable by using less paper. We will always have paper copies for those who prefer it, but if you can think about switching to using your device, we would be grateful.

Harry Bramma

We are sorry to learn of the death of Harry Bramma who was Director of Music at Southwark Cathedral from 1976-1989. May he rest in the love and peace of Christ. We will share details of Harry's funeral service in due course.

Mothers' Union New Banner Appeal

Ninian Comper East Window

Following concerns about the condition of the East Window above the High Altar, a detailed inspection has now revealed it to be in a fragile state. The entire window will need to be removed and stored pending a comprehensive plan for conservation and reinstatement. Lancelot 400

Lancelot 400 marks the 400th anniversary of the death of Bishop Lancelot Andrewes with a weekend of worship, music, talks, tours and exhibitions at Southwark Cathedral. Andrewes was Bishop of Winchester from 1619 and became closely associated with Southwark, where he died in 1626. He is the only Bishop of Winchester buried in Southwark Cathedral. A brilliant scholar, linguist and preacher, he was also one of the translators of the King James Bible. His sermons and writings continued to influence figures including T. S. Eliot, and his legacy remains significant in Anglican worship, theology and English literature.

Choral Eucharist — 11.00am The Very Rev'd David Hoyle, Dean of Westminster, will preach. The service will include the first performance of a newly commissioned hymn by Malcolm Guite, written for the anniversary.

Festal Choral Evensong — 3.00pm The Cathedral Choir is joined by the Choir of Pembroke College, Cambridge, where Andrewes was Master, for a special service.

Threads Through the Cross

3 September — 7 October 2026

Experience a stunning textile journey through Jesus' life, death and resurrection in the Cathedral over the next month.

Part of the hugely popular Threads Through the Bible trilogy by artist Jacqui Parkinson, Threads Through the Cross showcases the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus through intricate textile panels, with each panel over 2 metres high and ranging from 1.5 to over 3 metres wide.

Threads through the Bible is an incredible display of three sequences – Threads Through Creation, Threads Through the Cross and Threads through Revelation. Taking over 10 years to complete, a total of 44 panels and over 25 million stiches, this impressive trilogy of work would reach more than 80 meters long when exhibited together.
